How Bad Is Ocean Pollution, Really?
How Bad Is Ocean
Pollution, Really?
- 8.3 million tons of plastic gets discarded into the sea yearly and 236,000 tons of that are ingestible microplastics that marine creatures mistake for food.
- 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone
- Recent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals, and 40% of seabird species examined.
- There’s enough plastic in the ocean to circle the Earth 400 times
- It’s estimated that by year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight.
How Does It Affect Us?
- With 1 in 3 fish caught for human consumption now containing plastic, the question is no longer “are we eating plastic?” but “how bad for us is that?” In seawater, plastic absorbs chemicals like PCB and DDT which have been linked to endocrine disruption and even some cancers, becoming more powerful as they work their way up the food chain.
- Chemicals in heavily polluted waters can make their way back to us and cause serious health issues like reproductive problems, hormonal problems, kidney damage, and nervous system damage.
- The ocean plays an essential role for life on earth. It provides over 70% of the oxygen we breathe and over 97% of the world’s water supply. Everyday, the ocean is under attack from natural sources and manmade pollution. Pollution does not only affect marine life and their environment, it also affects humankind.
